Hello, Uptown!

It’s touring season, folks! Odds are your favorite up-and-coming band will be on the road these next couple of months.

So far this week I’ve been to 1.5 shows — the .5 is because I working on a write up during my Monday night music affair. This fact limited my ability to dance. I made up for it the next night and danced, maybe too much (no such thing).

It’s kind of become an accidental beat I’ve fallen into over the past couple months: music venues.

There’s something special about getting to observe the distinct quirks of the crowds that frequent each venue. You can feel their love for a place, especially when they know their on borrowed time with the space.

So, in the spirit of thinking about live music this week, here’s what’s on the October schedule for some Uptown venues.

Starting off strong with Soda Bar, which as has the most packed schedule between these venues. In the month of October they have 30 shows on deck. The only two days of the month they don’t have a show booked are Oct. 21 and Oct. 5. If that math isn’t adding up for you, it’s because there’s one day that’s slated for two shows.

Some names on the bill: YHWH Nailgun, Soulfly, Thee Marloes, Chanel Beads, Mama’s Broke, The Band Cope and Jacob Ray. Whether or not any of those ring a bell, there are plenty more on their site.

Next up we have Lou Lou’s, the revamped music venue in CH’s Lafayette Hotel. You’ll have 16 days out of the month to catch a show there. You can expect jazz from acts like Gilbert Castellanos & the New Latin Jazz Sextet or The Shunzo Ohno Band. You can find different flavors of country from Cody Carter & Ramblin Fever or Deke Dickerson and the Whippersnappers. Check out their shows here.

Now, admittedly, I have never been to this venue. But, Hillcrest’s EQ San Diego is home to a solid lineup of electronic, industrial shows. Every Monday the venue hosts a free “Blue Monday” set, chalked full of new wave/ dark 80’s music. The folks who bring CRSSD Fest to San Diego, also bring artists to the venue like Christian Löffler at the end of October. The venue currently has 14 opportunities to see a show in October.

The last venue I’ll highlight is The Observatory in North Park. They have 21 ticketed shows on their lineup for October including some touring acts, themed nights and a comedy set. Some of the musical acts booked include Blonde Redhead, Julia Jacklin, Cuco, Geordie Greep, Glaive and local band almost monday.

Let me know if you’re heading to a show sometime soon, and your favorite San Diego venue outside of Uptown. Happy dancing!
