Last year, 12 San Diego firefighters earned over $200,000 in overtime pay. One firefighter made $1.18 million in the past five years.
Tucked into our report on overtime and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department is this tidbit on a 2025 analysis that might have been forgotten:
“The city auditor found the department consistently underestimated the number of firefighters who leave the city while simultaneously overestimating the number of recruits who finish academy. The resulting staffing imbalance increases the demand for overtime.”
So, while the city’s police department also has some eye-popping OT numbers, SDPD is trending in the right direction. Dorian Hargrove reported earlier this month that current OT costs are expected to fall below what the department spent in the prior two fiscal years.
That’s not the case with SDFD, where OT costs have shot up to nearly $62.4 million since 2021. Dorian’s latest report outlines who is benefitting from the jump.
