Fans live, carry, share fútbol in Mexico. They rallied around their team’s World Cup win in a borderland celebration

Yep, folks, the World Cup is finally upon us, and our neighbor to the south had good news Thursday to open one of the most-watched events on the planet.
Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 in a match that, understandably, was quite a big deal in our San Diego-Tijuana binational region. Fans gathered at San Diego FC’s Soccer Celebration in Mission Beach, for a street party in Tijuana and even outside the Mexican consulate in Little Italy to root for El Tri, as Mexico’s national team is affectionately known. Alejandro Maciel and Adrian Childress were on the ground to capture the scenes.
All eyes turn to the U.S. team tonight. The U.S. has kicked booty and taken names at the Women’s World Cup. The men, not so much. We’ve never finished on top, yet hope springs eternal. Here’s our preview of the match against Paraguay, but keep this handy too – it’s our guide to the best bars, pop-ups and more in San Diego for catching the World Cup.
