Good morning, San Diego.
Authorities ordered evacuations during a fire Thursday and things turned heated for a California senator forced from a Homeland Security news conference in Los Angeles.
Despite some frightening moments, fire crews in North County made short work of a blaze that burned around 50 acres near Carlsbad and San Marcos.
So no fallout there. But what’s next for the showdown between California and the Trump administration? That’s unclear.
In the latest confrontation, Sen. Alex Padilla was intercepted and bodily removed from a news conference headed by DHS Secretary Kristi Noem. The agency accused him of barging in “without identifying himself.” However, he could clearly be heard saying, “I’m Senator Alex Padilla.”
In a class conscious nation where many people are aware – and even resentful – of the divide between the haves and the have nots, Padilla, surely aware of his privilege, raised this question: “If this is how the Department of Homeland Security responds to a senator with a question, you can only imagine what they’re doing to farmworkers, to cooks, to day laborers.”
Food for thought.
