Hello, La Mesa!
One of the best things that La Mesa offers compared to other area cities is the amount of public transportation options. I think public transit can partially be credited with keeping the city on a trend toward equity and accessibility to all.
It also lets people visit for large events like Oktoberfest without putting too much stress on neighborhood streets from people looking to park. I always tell people from further east, where there is maybe one bus per hour, to just park at the Spring Street transit station and take the trolley for one stop to land in the middle of the festivities.
Depending on how north or south someone is commuting from, Spring Street station is the east-most spot to catch a trolley on the way to work or for a Padres game. It’s enabled by a large, 324-spot park-and-ride lot, which frankly, was way underutilized.
Well, that’s about to change. Starting Wednesday, June 24, the parking lot will be closed for the next two years. The expansive parking lot will be transformed into affordable family housing units, which will be another way to keep La Mesa accessible to all income levels.
That doesn’t leave you without options. Of course, it’s possible to use a bus rather than a car to get to the Spring Street transit station. Grossmont Transit Center, which has trolleys from both the Orange and Green lines, also has a park and ride, as does 70th Street for the Green Line and Massachusetts Avenue for the Orange Line.
