Hello, Downtown!

The last time the Downtown San Diego Partnership did a pets study it found 42% of 92101 residents had furry friends. About three quarters of those pets were dogs. Given downtown’s human population of roughly 40,000, that means close to 12,000 doggies may inhabit our area.

That’s a fetching demographic. The Margaritaville Hotel San Diego is trying to leash some of those dog owners into attending its weekly Yappy Hour. Both downtown locals and hotel guests are invited every Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. to the hotel’s rooftop 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar.

The Yappy Hour menu caters to man’s best friend. Snacks include the Canine Crudité with fresh veggies, the Bark Burger made with a grilled beef patty and the Paw-lickin’ Chicken.

To wash all that down, barktails include the Pawgarita, a cucumber and ice blend with a cucumber garnish, and the Pupa Colada, made with coconut puree and topped with a treat garnish.

The last Thursday of every month brings a special event. On Sept. 25 it’s Yappy Yoga. Instructor Amanda Joy specializes in downward dogging with both two- and four-legged audiences. This event will also include adoptable dogs from the San Diego Humane Society.

Put a paw print on your calendar for Oct. 30. Just before Halloween, the themed celebration will include a dog costume contest and colorful puppy parade.

One final thought: Whether it’s Yappy Hour or not, please pick up after your city pooch.
