Hello, Downtown!

There’s something about the Quartyard public space in East Village that’s both accessible and underground. Mainstream but hip. In the spirit of a famous “Saturday Night Live” skit, Quartyard is equal parts “a floor wax and a dessert topping.

It’s many things to different people. And soon (to borrow from the original Spinal Tap movie), “this one goes to 11.” That’s right, Quartyard is preparing to celebrate its 11th anniversary.

Constructed from repurposed shipping containers, Quartyard is an event venue and an urban park. It has a restaurant, full-service beer garden, art space and coffee shop.

The original goal was to activate vacant urban land into vibrant outdoor community space. Designed by RAD Lab and built by FreeForm Development, recall that Quartyard first popped up at the corner of Park Boulevard and Market Street (where UC San Diego now has a building).

As it was created to do, Quartyard packed up and moved. In 2018, its new address became vacant publicly owned property at 1301 Market Street.

Quartyard holds events that give you rizz just by knowing about them. Go check out Bingo Loco. It’s billed as an interactive show with dance-offs, rave rounds, lip-sync battles and some scenarios that can’t be explained without being bleeped.

The 11th anniversary party is May 2 from 5 to 9 p.m. The event will feature the album-release party of Egyptian-American muti-instrumentalist Mitchum Yacoub’s new offering A Way In. Yes, you’re cool enough to come.

Get anniversary party ticket info and experience an immediate boost in your self-esteem.
