San Diegans rally to celebrate World Cup finals — even without Mexico involved
At watch parties around town, hundreds gathered for one more blast of the joy the Men’s World Cup has provided over the summer.
For many of them, they weren’t going out of any particular loyalty to either finalist Argentina or Spain; they went for love of the game, making up for the fact that neither the U.S. or Mexico had made it this far.
True to form, the match didn’t disappoint; it blew past 90 minutes and then 100. Finally, in minute 106 — 39 seconds into the second half of extra time — Spain claimed a goal and with it, a 1-0 victory and the championship.
The loss was an emotional one — and not just for fans. Argentina’s Lionel Messi, who has been an international face of Argentina’s national team, was caught on TV sitting stunned on the pitch after the game, his final World Cup contest.
