Hello, Point Loma and Ocean Beach!
As most of you probably know, The Black has reopened! After what seemed like an emotional goodbye to OB, owner Kurt Dornbusch sold the business to local businessman Peter Yaldo. Yaldo was born and raised in Chula Vista, but has roots in OB — his grandfather and father owned a business on the corner of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and Voltaire Street called Jimmy’s Party Store.
Yaldo grew up around the store and in OB, so The Black was a good opportunity for him to establish his own roots within the community. The store has softly opened, but Yaldo plans for a grand opening later in April.
I talked to Yaldo about his plans for The Black as he takes the helm of Newport Avenue’s infamous store. He said he wants to maintain the integrity of the brand while also adapting to the needs of tourists and the community.
That could look like anything from an umbrella to sunscreen. Yaldo even mentioned adding pet supplies to their stock. Either way, as the new stuff comes in, the old stuff — like the books, music posters, glassware, etc. — will stay.
Yaldo also opted to keep the renovations to a minimum to maintain the iconic look that The Black has had for years. Above all, Yaldo was adamant about the support he’s received from the community and how he’s happy to give the business a second life.
