Hello, Downtown!
I’ve got the upcoming honor of interviewing husband-and-wife journalists who both teach and advise young writers at San Diego State University. It’s part of the San Diego Press Club’s latest Zoom educational programming, happening April 14 at 6 p.m.
Jackie Bryant and Jesse Marx are well-known in local and national media circles. Giving back to this community, they send well-prepared college interns to Times of San Diego, The San Diego Sun and other area news outlets.
Marx is a former associate editor at Voice of San Diego and was the deputy investigative editor at the San Francisco Chronicle. Bryant was most recently managing editor at San Diego Magazine and is now a content director and editor for Leaf Magazines. She also has a lively “Cannabitch” newsletter based on Substack.
Bryant teaches four classes within SDSU’s School of Journalism & Media Studies. Marx is the student media manager for the school’s newspaper, The Daily Aztec.
Both have freelanced for major publications such as Wired, The Nation, In These Times (Marx), and The Washington Post, Rolling Stone and CNN (Bryant).
What are we going to talk about? Their meet-cute, of course. And the husband-and-wife dynamic of working together. They’ll also discuss media career tracks, the evolving industry landscape, how to be inspired by journalism and when to pivot.
