Good morning, San Diego.

Will we or won’t we?

That’s a big question around here as spring approaches, after what has shaken out to be an uncommonly mild winter season so far: Is San Diego County going to get its superbloom, or what?

The answer so far is a solid “maybe.” It’s true that there are wildflowers already blossoming out in the desert, well earlier than most years. But some of those are already at the end of their life cycles, because they haven’t seen rain since December.

Whether the desert blooms, experts tell our Elizabeth Ireland, comes down to what you might expect: moisture levels and temperature — but the exact combination remains unclear, and the answers refused to be rushed.

While scientists continue to apply themselves to the uncertainties of superblooms, sightseers and nature lovers can find real-time information about where to find flowers in Anza-Borrego here.

While the flowers may not have returned en masse to the southern California deserts yet, Greg Bovino has. The diminutive Border Patrol Commander at Large is back in Imperial County following an extended, violent raid on Minneapolis during which agents shot and killed at least two peaceful protesters.

His actions in Minnesota are notorious, but the man himself is not particularly well-known in southern California. You can read more about him here from our partners at inewsource.

Finally, hope you’re all recovering well from your Super Bowl, Puppy Bowl, or (my favorite) Superb Owl parties. Don’t forget to hydrate!

With the entry of San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, the large field of candidates to succeed Gov. Gavin Newsom is probably complete — and could very well shrink.
