Hello, Point Loma and Ocean Beach!

Ocean Beach is constantly evolving but somehow manages to stay the same. I’m thinking especially of Newport Avenue — our community’s cultural hub. All along Newport Avenue, businesses come and go, but new and creative businesses always fill in the empty spots.

Take Sunshine Daydreams, the eclectic hippie-boho boutique that operated on Newport Avenue for 33 years until this past July, when it permanently closed. After being such a mainstay in OB for over 30 years, there were certainly big shoes to fill.

Business owner Monique Sapia quickly took the helm of the storefront and opened Sunset Marketplace, a vintage store that feels just as OB as Sunshine Daydreams. Sapia is a San Diego native who operated a vintage clothing resale business in Temecula for over 25 years. She recently retired to OB but found herself coming out of retirement to open up Sunset Marketplace in August.

In opening her business, Sapia made sure the community was involved in some way.  She invited people to participate in her community art project, which entailed spray painting with positive sentiments on the floor. The graffiti-esque scrawled floors fit perfectly in a storefront along Newport Avenue.

A vintage store also feels fitting for Newport Avenue. Sapia, who has a background in vintage reselling, is focused on finding brands that aren’t always easy to find but are still in wearable condition. For Sapia, that could mean finding natural materials that age well, like leather or cotton.

Something tells me Sunset Marketplace will age incredibly well on Newport Avenue. With a community-oriented mindset and zany storefront, it should stay in the community for the next 33 years and then some.

Go check out Sunset Marketplace on 4979 Newport Ave!
