Good morning, San Diego.

Happy Presidents’ Day to all who celebrate! If you get the day off today, spare a thought for those of us toiling down in the news mines.

Encouraging news today for local ecosystems, as several groups of mountain lions were declared “threatened” last week by the California Fish and Game Commission. That will increase existing protections for the big cats, which play a crucial role in maintaining equilibrium between predator animals, their prey, and plants. Plus, these tawny, solitary creatures add a fierce beauty to California. May they continue to stalk our mountains and brushlands in peace.

Our other big story for today is the rain that’s going to inundate us almost all week. It looks like it might be another humdinger of a storm, with gusty winds in the forecast and snow potentially all the way down to 3,000 feet, so make sure all your weather gear is good to go and that you’ve got your sandbags ready if you need them.

As for me, I am fully prepared to do my part as a San Diegan by saying “Well, at least we’re getting the reservoirs filled” at least once an hour until the storm is gone.
