How are you doing in this heat? As I discussed last week, the heat wave brought on by El Niño has been hitting San Diego really hard. The excessively high temperatures, elevated humidity and strong winds have been cooking our little beach town since Labor Day Weekend. San Diego County coastal areas and other parts of Southern California are under an extreme heat warning through Thursday evening, though it’s possible the warning could be extended.
Heat-related illnesses are far more likely to occur in extreme heat, so be on the lookout for dehydration, dizziness and heat exhaustion. Stay in air conditioned spaces as much as possible, drink fluids and electrolytes, avoid going in the sun during peak hours, and check up on your elderly neighbors. Keep pets and children away from hot cars and hot sidewalks.
If you need a place to cool off, check out Resort Pass for access to luxury pools at hotels around town, like the Catamaran or Paradise Point. You can also rent private swimming pools by the hour on Swimply, with plenty of options nearby in Bay Park and Clairemont.
Given these changes to our weather patterns, I wouldn’t be surprised if heat waves continue through the fall. Based on the recent UN report on climate change, my guess is San Diego summers will continue to swelter in the coming years. So we better gear up and invest in portable AC units now.
