Today’s newsletter is presented by YMCA San Diego.
Good morning, San Diego.
San Diego and its beaches. They’re world renowned for a good reason. But tell that to Imperial Beach residents. Until the border sewage situation is cleared up, the coastal life is passing them by.
As one woman said, “We’re living in this beach community and we’re not living a beach life.”
The recent heat, along with a broken pump in Tijuana, made a bad situation worse, and when that happens, health complaints – from rashes to eye irritation and migraines to brain fog – increase throughout the South Bay. Our partner, CalMatters, paid a visit to residents, including a school nurse whose daughter has asthma, who talked about how they cope while lawmakers and regulators on both sides of the border continue to grapple with how to clean up the Tijuana River.
In other news, a UC San Diego policy center issued a report based on surveys of Minneapolis residents showing “troubling patterns” during the winter ICE operation in the state. UCSD also found itself targeted again by the Trump administration, this time based on questions about racial discrimination in medical school admissions. The last time, in June, the probe stemmed from a challenge to diversity in hiring.
Heading into the weekend, a young local playwright has a new play debuting Friday. And check out our Weekend Guide for much more to do as our hot spell continues. How about a block party or a movie at the Beach? Sounds just about right.
