Hello, Downtown!

Want to spend the Christmas season with Will Ferrell? Do it at downtown San Diego’s big outdoor movie screen while huddling in a loveseat next to a wood-burning personal heater.

Welcome to Rooftop Cinema Club Embarcadero. It’s on the fourth-floor Sport Terrace of the Manchester Grand Hyatt. Guests enjoy al fresco second-run movies on an LED screen while listening through high-fidelity earphones.

Here’s a Seven Days of Christmas curated itinerary of Rooftop Cinema’s holiday offerings:

Dec. 18: “Elf”

We believe Ferrell every time he earnestly emotes: “Santa, here?! I know him!”

Dec. 19: “The Polar Express”

So far, the fifth-best animated feature with Tom Hanks doing voiceover.

Dec. 20: “Die Hard”

Yes, this violent action film is a Christmas movie. It’s set on Christmas Eve. “Yippee-ki-yay!”

Dec. 21: “It’s A Wonderful Life”

Bedford Falls being saved from turning into Pottersville by Jimmy Stewart is a 79-year-old story that premiered the same year President Donald Trump was born.

Dec. 22: “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” (2000)

A celebration of Dr. Seuss’ estate selling the book’s movie rights for $5 million upfront, 4% of the box-office gross and 50% of merchandising revenue.

Dec. 23: “The Nightmare Before Christmas”

Tim Burton’s creation is the only holiday classic claimed by both Christmas and Halloween.

Dec. 24: “Elf” (Again)

Buddy the Elf: “We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: Candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup.”

At Rooftop Cinema, opt for a bucket of popcorn and maybe an IPA from the bar.
