Spencer Jones saw a homer the first time he went to a Padres game. Now the Encinitas native could launch one against them
Today we have the tale of a local boy done good. But we warn you, the tale involves the New York Yankees.
The Yanks aren’t necessarily favored in these parts (or many parts, tbh). The Padres do not have fond memories of New York (the Yanks swept the Friars in the 1998 World Series). They are the Evil Empire (or were. Aren’t the Dodgers the greater evil now?). My boss (he’s a theme today) calls them “the bad guys at Petco this weekend.”
Spencer Jones isn’t a bad guy. The Encinitas native just happens to be making the most of his shot with the Yankees.
That shot came due to misfortune – superstar Aaron Judge suffered a fractured rib. But even he has nice things to say about Jones, who was moving up and down between the minors and the big club until his last call up three months ago. This time, with nine homers and 28 RBIs, he’s stuck around.
For his part, Jones, a graduate of La Costa Canyon High in Carlsbad, says he’s “super excited” to be back in San Diego. He has friends and family here and a baby nephew he hasn’t seen in months. We’ll let contributor Barry Bloom introduce you to a Yankee you’ll be pleased to know (Probably, anyway, depending on how well he does against the Padres).
