Hello, Downtown!
Scientists and meteorologists shove data into an algorithm to determine when our seasons start. In 2025, winter began on December 21. This year, spring sprang on March 20 and summer will start on June 21. Not in San Diego, though.
“They” say fall will drop on Sept. 22 – but locals know that summer lasts well into October, and sometimes longer. Ask anybody.
And so in an era when opinions are as good as facts, know that summer in San Diego starts the weekend ArtWalk kicks off.
This year, “summer,” or if you prefer to call it Mission Fed ArtWalk, shines upon us April 25 and 26. Saturday hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday’s fun goes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
This is the 42nd year of ArtWalk, when the streets of Little Italy are closed to traffic and the work of more than 250 visual artists will fill booths for more than 100,000 guests to stroll past and ogle (or even purchase).
According to the producers of ArtWalk, “Owning original art, and having an opportunity to meet the creators, adds meaning and inspiration to life.”
Well put. I haven’t been to 42 ArtWalks. But I’ve experienced enough to know that something about this transcendental event causes the temperature to rise.
During ArtWalk, Little Italy’s India Street becomes a catwalk for summer attire. Musical bands will play on street corners. Restaurants will be open for business (even though the bratwurst booth will be calling my name). But no matter what your cell phone’s weather app tells you, ArtWalk is the kickoff to summer.
