Today’s newsletter is presented by County of San Diego – Office of Emergency Services.
Good morning, San Diego.
You may be very focused on a certain game Sunday (or as San Diego lacks skin in said game, more attuned to the half-time show or just the spread at the party), but don’t sleep on this weekend in music. You would truly be missing out.
Like your artists homegrown? Try The Styletones at Lou Lou’s and Trevor Davis at Shake Bar & Lounge, both on Friday.
Combine the homegrown with the nostalgic when Jerry Raney, once of the Beat Farmers, performs at The Downtown Cafe Sunday.
Like pop music, but looking to expand your horizons? The San Diego Symphony takes on a mega star, blending “Beethoven and Beyoncé” Friday at the Jacobs Music Center downtown.
Like musical theater, but prefer to be in the spotlight? How about cosplay for theater kids at “Broadway Rave” Friday? Dance. Belt out the tunes, if you’ve got the pipes. Dress up as Mama Rose. Do it all at the House of Blues.
Genre-wise, this weekend really runs the gamut, from soul and funk to folk and emo. If that’s too tame, dip into western space grunge and discodelic. We have the lowdown on these shows and much more, from Bart Mendoza and Matthew Lickona, with bonus shows in our Weekend Guide. Oh, and about that big game – the guide also has a list of the best bars and restaurants to watch it or just be part of the fun.

Today’s opinion column
Opinion: Our treasured Balboa Park can’t be city hall’s cash register
On Feb. 9, the City Council will face a clear choice: pause a bad policy and hope the backlash fades, or repeal it and move forward with a fair alternative.
