Good morning, San Diego.

Though we are far from the Pentagon, San Diego almost always plays a role when it comes to major military operations.

The overnight attack on Iran was no different. Jets from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar took part, after lifting off from the USS Abraham Lincoln, which is based at Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado. The aircraft carrier, already deployed, headed to the Middle East six weeks ago as the U.S. beefed up forces in the region.

The operation isn’t over, according to President Trump, who declared on social media, partly in all caps, that “heavy and pinpoint bombing … will continue, uninterrupted throughout the week or as long as necessary to achieve our objective of PEACE THROUGHOUT THE MIDDLE EAST AND, INDEED, THE WORLD!”

Three members of San Diego’s congressional delegation condemned the attack, while criticizing Trump for again bypassing Congress when it comes to war powers. One, Rep. Sara Jacobs, called out the president for failing “to learn from history that the United States has an abysmal track record of success” when it comes to Middle East missions.

No matter what side of the argument you fall on, it should be said – our thoughts go out to our military pilots, sailors and Marines as they are the ones on the front lines.

Meanwhile, a U.S. Navy veteran – his path to the U.S. included Haiti, then Canada – is making an impact in local medicine. He just scored a big honor for his hard work; Elizabeth Ireland has more.
