Good morning, San Diego.

Two stories out of the South Bay made news Friday, about individuals going in opposite directions. One remains an inspiration and in his retirement gives back to veterans. Another, who once held a position of great trust, is a cautionary tale.

That saga came to an end Friday with the sentencing of the former “Teacher of the Year” who authorities discovered was sexually abusing two of her students. Jacqueline Ma apologized in court for harming the boys, ages 11 and 12 at the time. But Judge Enrique Camarena said her crimes were part of “a prolonged pattern of child sexual abuse” and sentenced her to a long prison term.

Let’s turn to Donnie Edwards, a far happier South Bay story. The former San Diego Charger made a name for himself in football, but his path to the NFL started at a National City Boys & Girls Club. The famed youth organization honors its alums and now Edwards is in the Boys & Girls Clubs’ Hall of Fame. And his work with vets? He runs a foundation that supports them.
