Good morning, San Diego.

While thousands of humble sailors returned to their home port in San Diego Thursday after months of deployment, two power brokers duked it out on the national stage. One of them was our governor.

The arrival of the USS Carl Vinson at Naval Air Station North Island had all the heartwarming hugs you’d expect, along with cries of “daddy, daddy, daddy” from a group of children when they spotted their father. The crew has labored for nine long months far from home and the carrier’s commander acknowledged that they saw “threats” at sea.

Their loved ones, no doubt, are overjoyed to have them safe and sound in San Diego. Welcome home, Vinson crew, one and all!

Then there’s President Trump and Gov. Newsom, who are locking horns over redistricting, or depending on your perspective, gerrymandering. Newsom upped the ante Thursday in Los Angeles and – coincidence? – masked immigration officers appeared outside the museum where he was speaking. Political columnist Dan Walters has likened their exchanges to clashes in old cartoons (Hint: See the subject line). Yet Newsom stated his goal in grand terms: “We’re giving the people of this state the power to save democracy.” Let’s just say California Republicans do not agree. Funny, that. Texas Democrats might commiserate.

Turning to a more innocent showdown in LA … Your first-place Padres – nobody’s been able to say that late in the season since 2010 – take on the hated Dodgers tonight through Sunday.
