It’s alive! 

Midway Rising, the development project around the old Sports Arena region, is back — despite the latest legal challenges

The project would redevelop the area into an urban district with thousands of homes, a new entertainment venue and acres of parks. The legal setback came in October when a court overturned a ballot measure eliminating the coastal height limit in Midway. 

But the project’s developers say they can still build it thanks to California’s density bonus law, which lets developers waive local restrictions if they reserve units for low-income residents.

As our Andrew Keatts reports, that’s only possible because of years of expansions of the density bonus law that originated here in San Diego.

State laws authored by San Diego electeds, and court rulings based over San Diego projects were pivotal in expanding the law enough that even a redevelopment as big as Midway Rising could fit in it.
