La Mesa Courier weekly update

Hello, La Mesa!

Drew Sitton, La Mesa Courier newsletter host

I missed last week’s Grossmont Union High School Board meeting while finishing up another story.

It looks to have been another contentious one, this time over Trustee Chris Fite’s resolution to protect immigrant students and families after ICE has arrested parents outside other schools in the region. Without a second trustee willing to support the resolution though, there was no discussion or vote on the matter— upsetting students, teachers and community advocates in the audience.

Instead, on Monday I caught up with the volunteer team behind the Recall Scott Eckert effort. After coming up thousands of signatures short, it looks like Eckert will remain on the GUHSD board at least until his term ends in 2028.

The team says this is not the end of its efforts to flip the school board though. More on that here.
