Newsflash:
A big part of my wife’s decision to move to San Carlos, against my wishes to move closer to the beach, was because of the schools. Dailard Elementary in particular caught her eye.
Ten years later, our oldest spent six years (including TK) and my youngest so far five years (now in fifth grade) at Dailard Elementary.
During that time, school nurses, staff and the teachers have guided my kids, and us for that matter, through a pandemic (that sure is crazy to write), countless bumps, a few potential low-grade concussions and some blacktop scrapes. Not to mention a compound fracture that turned my kid’s arm into a ‘V’-shaped limb, some educational needs and emotional outbursts, as well as a list of other things.
The other day, our freelancer Sean Monney turned in a story on Dailard Elementary celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. For his article, Sean interviewed a great-grandmother who sent her daughters and now her great-granddaughter to Dailard.
Well, what kind of parent would I be if I didn’t take that opportunity to reflect a bit on the school that helped raise my two sons?
Any parent who is lucky enough to have their kids stay in a single school likely has similar stories about their elementary school, the teachers and staff there.
Dailard is no different. Aside from all the teachers have done, which honestly is more than I can truly grasp, the staff has made Dailard the center of our little pocket of San Carlos.
From the annual Dailard Campout, where hundreds of parents and their children get to pop a tent in the grass for a night and let the kids run and play and watch a movie, to dance parties and the like, Dailard administrators have brought the parents, the kids and the teachers and staff all closer together.
Sure, I complained at the time. What kind of selfish man would I be if I didn’t? But seeing the article about Dailard turning 50 really made me appreciate what the school, its teachers and staff have all done for me and my family, and the families that go there.
So, while 50 may be the new 30, thank all things holy, I want to take a beat to wish Dailard a happy 50th.
