Good morning, San Diego.

For years, the pedestrian bridge spanning the I-5 between Barrio Logan and Logan Heights has been as unwelcoming as the freeway that ripped the neighborhoods in two when it was built decades ago.

But a new mural designed by an artist from the community aims to reclaim the piece of industrial concrete as a canvas for the community’s history.

Brisk One, a mural and graffiti artist, said he hoped kids would jump on the serpent, inspired in part by the feathered serpents on the pyramid at Xochicalco, playing hopscotch on its diamondback.

“Kids that cross that bridge to go to school everyday can see that as part of their upbringing,” he told our Tessa Balc.

Check out Balc’s feature on the new mural, the largest Brisk has done, which was part of an $8.6 million Caltrans grant that included four other pedestrian bridges in the county.

In case you missed it yesterday:

  • Hirving “Chucky” Lozano, the star Mexican forward San Diego FC brought in for its inaugural season, is done with the club after just one season, as our Mark Nero reported Friday.

It’s not an altogether surprising development, after SDFC relegated Lozano to a reserve role during its historic playoff run. That followed an altercation with coaches during an October match that landed him on the bench.
