‘Where’s the Native American section?’ Rincon entrepreneur Ruth-Ann Thorn talks beauty, health, inclusion

Ruth-Ann Thorn has broken into the beauty industry, the best way she knew how to — by creating something that represented herself and where she came from.

Her skincare line, N8iV beauty, incorporates products sourced from reservation land, consulting the her tribe, the Rincon Band of Payómkawichum or Luiseño Indians, and the greater American Indigenous community on the specific ingredients.

She’s now found that her line is rapidly gaining traction in the beauty world that she once hadn’t seen herself represented in.

But what’s more is that she’s found herself reclaiming land in the city she was raised in. She’s the first Indigenous person to own property — her storefront, Native Star — in the Gaslamp Quarter.
