Rady Children’s to resume gender‑affirming care as part of court settlement

Gender-affirming care is back on the table at Rady Children’s Hospital as part of a settlement between the hospital and the state of California.

Last year, the Trump administration threatened to end all federal funding for hospitals that provide gender-affirming care. Rady Children’s said that would cause its hospitals in San Diego and Orange County to closed, and announced earlier this year it would end the area of treatment. The state quickly sued, leading to months of legal wrangling between California and the hospital.

The agreement means Rady Children’s will resume puberty blocker implant procedures, while the state allows the hospital to determine where, exactly, the procedures will be performed.

But as our Dorian Hargrove explains in a new story, the dispute will still require further hearings — and the settlement does not disrupt a class-action lawsuit brought by four families seeking gender-affirming care.
