Oceanside’s Pop Warner team made light work of the competition last season.

The club, which serves 300 kids across all age groups, won two national championships last year, one in the 14-and-under age group, and one for the 13-and-under age group. They celebrated with a proclamation from Oceanside’s mayor and a party fittingly held at Junior Seau Pier Amphitheater.

But the Oceanside Pop Warner now faces a more daunting foe: the roughly $9,000 they pay to host a day of games at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, part of the Oceanside Unified School District. Oh, and that’s for a field coaches say is so poorly maintained that it’s a safety hazard.

That cost has helped push the per-player registration fee from $505 to $675 in recent years.

Our contributor Noah Perkins has a great story on the local team that’s racking up titles as fast as it is unsustainable rental fees.
