Hello, Point Loma and Ocean Beach!

Just like that, baseball season is back. The Padres opened their season against the Detroit Tigers last Thursday at Petco Park. It was a tough opening series for the Friars, especially in game one when they faced the reigning two time American League Cy-Young winner, Tarik Skubal and lost 8-2.

They were able to pull out a shutout win on Saturday to avoid the sweep with all-star closer Mason Miller making his first appearance of the season in the 9th inning. Unfortunately if you missed them last weekend, the Padres are heading off to Boston to play the Red Sox in another interleague series this weekend.

Locally, the Pointers baseball and softball teams came out swinging in their respective seasons. Women’s softball in particular seems to have the confidence to win another CIF championship, according to their head coach Billy Hunyady.

Times of San Diego contributor Scott Hopkins details new additions that give them the strength to win another title this year, even after bumping up to Division I play. As of Wednesday, they hold a 7-4 record but their other numbers are very strong — batting a team average of .353 and outscoring opponents 25-5. Catch them at their next home game on April 8.

Boy’s varsity baseball, also off to a solid start, is defending a CIF title from last season. They currently hold a 6-3-1 record and are batting .310 as a team. If you don’t speak baseball it means the team is hitting well above average. The next Pointers game is on April 10 against La Jolla Country Day.

On the collegiate level, Point Loma Nazarene University’s baseball team continues to dominate the PacWest conference. They currently stand atop the conference standings with a 28-7 record. Their next game at Carroll B. Land Baseball field is on April 17 against Westmont.

So if a Major League game is too pricey for you, there’s plenty of baseball around Point Loma to see. Either way, the weather has been perfect to enjoy America’s pastime, so get out there and watch a ballgame.
