Hello, Uptown!
According to the 2026 Point-in-Time Count, approximately 9,800 individuals are currently experiencing homelessness in San Diego County. The report shows a drop in unsheltered homelessness and a 12% increase in sheltered homelessness, meaning fewer people living in tents, outside or in their cars. Homelessness has decreased in the region, but only very slightly, leaving much room for work to be done.
If you’re looking for a way in which to contribute to our neighborhood’s efforts in providing relief for those experiencing food and housing insecurity, the opportunity to do so might be just around the corner.
Sack Lunch Sunday is an event hosted by the Normal Heights United Church in which volunteers gather to pack lunches for people experiencing homelessness and food uncertainty in San Diego.
The event is a monthly tradition hosted every second Sunday of the month, with their next installment happening this week on Sunday, May 10, 2026.
Whether or not you are a member of the church, or attend their weekly services, the Sack Lunch Sunday is open to everyone who wishes to participate. If you are unwilling to attend to pack lunches alongside other volunteers in the church kitchen, you can contribute by donating goods like fruit, juice boxes and granola bars.
