Inside the two-year struggle to build six tiny homes for unhoused residents in Pacific Beach
What does it take to house the unsheltered? In Pacific Beach, the answer is at least two years and an entire community.
Six tiny homes are finally up, serving people in the neighborhood. The project was the culmination of a collaborative effort between neighboring town councils, churches, businesses, and governmental offices, and it sets Pacific Beach apart as the first neighborhood in San Diego to take this community-driven approach to homeless solutions.
The set of six shelter cabins are designed to offer transitional shelter to those who are working yet unhoused. PB is the first neighborhood in San Diego to offer these tiny homes — which come with a bed, air conditioning, and privacy.
Six shelters are hardly a drop in the bucket locally — San Diego’s Regional Taskforce on Homelessness counted more than 30,000 unhoused people in May — but for the people those structures shelter, it’s the opportunity to get a decent night’s sleep and do some laundry, which when you’re working or looking for work can be a life-changing opportunity.
Getting the first-of-its-kind project built is never easy; the city’s permitting process caused months of the delays. And those six homes came out of a lot of a hundred provided by the county — 94 of which still remain unclaimed.
You can read all about the process, and the delays, in today’s lead story from our freelancer Ashlyn Lipori-Russie.
