As we head into Labor Day weekend, look out for new changes to parking meters around the neighborhood. To help make up for the city’s budget deficit, paid parking in Pacific Beach has been extended an extra two hours until 10 p.m. and will now also include Sundays.

This means you’ll have to keep feeding the meter well into the night in commercial areas, and beach parking on the weekends will come with stricter time limits.

The change is drawing a strong reaction from folks in the neighborhood.

“I understand the city’s budget is constrained, but it feels like a petty cash grab at a time when high cost of living is squeezing everyone,” said Crown Point resident Alejandro Hohmann. “A trip to pick up ice cream is going to be $50 more expensive with the inevitable ticket. I wish City Council got more creative around revenue generation.”

The City of San Diego has said the changes are part of an effort to make sure our parking rules are in line with other major cities in California. But a quick search on Los Angeles’ parking practices shows meters are active until 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday in most areas.

I hope you have a fun and safe long weekend!
