Today’s newsletter is presented by San Diego Floral Association.
Hello, Downtown!
I’ve previously written that one of the best aspects of downtown living is the option to be relatively carless. It’s time for the annual celebrations.
Bike Month is celebrated throughout May. National Bike to Work Week is May 11-17 and Bike to Work Day is May 15. Join me out on the streets May 21 from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. for Bike Anywhere Day.
Pedal as much as you can. Yes, celebrate biking to work. I’ll take Bike Anywhere Day, any day.
BAD is good. The event is sponsored by regional planning group SANDAG. Register for the day and be eligible to win a Ridepanda e-bike.
On BAD, there’ll be 115 “pit stops” throughout the county, including a half dozen in downtown. Each pit stop is sponsored by a separate entity.
I plan to pit my e-bike at all six of the downtown stops. Technically, I could ask for a free T-shirt at every stop. I won’t. OK, if I do, I’ll donate all but one to Goodwill.
Downtown pit stop highlights include:
Broadway Pier (1000 N Embaradero): The Port of San Diego will have Radio Latina blaring while riders can get coffee, breakfast empanadas and other tchotchkes.
Civic Center Plaza (Third Ave. & B Street): Stop for coffee, bagels and fruit. Park in a temporary bike rack and socialize with other riders.
East Village Tavern Bowl (930 Market Street): Get coffee and bagels. Hop off your frame and into a non-bike lane inside EVT Bowl. Stay out of the gutter, toss a strike and win a complimentary bowling party.
