Hello, Point Loma and Ocean Beach!
I know, I know, the heat surely hasn’t made it feel like October but there are signs that the fall season is beginning to ramp up. One is that buzz of October baseball in San Diego (Well, the temporary buzz. The Padres were eliminated at Petco Park Wednesday night).
Another sign: Ocean Beach’s Oktoberfest! Every year on the second weekend of October, OB has a beer-fueled party with live music and more at the end of Newport Avenue. The two-day festival starts at 4:30 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday.
This year, the theme of the Oktoberfest is Y2K throwback. The weekend will kick off with Flashback Friday Locals Night, which will feature local OB bands including Band of Gringos and Electric Waste Band with 2 for 1 beers until 5 p.m. Saturday starts at 12 p.m. and features a fun lineup of cover bands including a No Doubt tribute band, Red Not Chili Peppers and American Idiots (Green Day). Then, in the evening, from 8-10 p.m. Oktoberfest will shift to an after dark Y2K neon party.
Then, of course, there is the beer garden, which will feature local brewers alongside German beers, seltzers and cocktails. Currently, there are only VIP tickets for sale, and they’ll run you $88 for both days, but general admission tickets can be purchased the day of the event for $20. This is also a 21-and-up event, so no kids allowed.
If you’re anything like me, you probably watch the music from the outside and crawl from bar to bar on Newport Avenue instead of paying for a ticket. Either way, this event always brings the community together!
