Good morning, San Diego.

It’s a morning, all right. I’m moving a little slow, and I’ll tell you why. I try to think about what I’m going to write in the morning newsletters the day before – if there’s an interesting news tidbit, or if I see something I’d like to write about, I make a mental note of it.

And so, this morning I was going to write a little piece about the October 2025 supermoon and ask readers if they had seen it, but that was before the moon actually came up.

Of course you saw the moon. I don’t think you could have missed the moon if you had tried. That supermoon was beaming its beautiful silvery light right into my window and directly into my eyes all night long. It was practically daylight out there. So I imagine that yes, you probably saw it, whether there was cloud cover or not. It was a beautiful, very bright night.

The sky was also clear over my part of San Diego, which is about to change as the remnants of Hurricane Priscilla are bringing some moisture into the area over the next few days, and a cooldown right on her heels.

We have an array of stories about the shutdown and the effects it’s having locally – and how San Diegans are stepping up for one another. We’re also helping out other parts of the region; local controllers coordinated air traffic for several hours last night at the Burbank Airport as the shutdown drags on.

Finally, don’t forget to check out today’s opinion column on a topic close to my heart: the tuba. Its history is intertwined with that of immigration to the United States – and tells a story of hope and liberation.

Opinion: The tuba’s cross-border journey to the front of the band

The tuba mania in Southern California has subsided somewhat, yet the big horn’s journey reflects the liberation so many Mexican immigrants felt in the U.S.
