Good morning, San Diego.
It’s a rough old news cycle out there, folks, whether it’s locally, nationally, or internationally. I’m thinking of the Caribbean this morning and Jamaica and Cuba in particular, as Hurricane Melissa bears down on the island nations. Hoping for the best and sending all my best thoughts to everyone affected and everyone here who might be fretting about family and friends in that massive storm’s path. I know I am.
Locally, Fleet Week’s Broadway Pier events have been canceled due to the ongoing federal shutdown, although some activities will be able to go forward. Check out our top story for more information on what’s been cut and what’s still taking place.
Lawmakers were also refused entry to the downtown courthouse where asylum-seekers and refugees are being “processed” – again, and the San Diego City Council will be revisiting its very unpopular water rate hike again today after postponing it last month.
Whew. It’s another heavy day, and I’ve barely recovered from the whole “missiles shot at the 5” thing a week or so ago. (What a sentence.) But, because I always feel the need to offset the bad with whatever good – or at least interesting – that I can find, I did want to call attention the San Diego Zoo, where a routine check recently turned up an entirely new species of plant: the dainty bamboo fern. The lovely little Chamaedorea delicata can be found, appropriately, in Fern Canyon.
As the great Dr. Ian Malcolm once said, “Life, uh… finds a way.”
Stay safe out there, friends.

Opinion: Chronic deficits loom as Newsom prepares his last state budget
If revenues don’t increase quickly and sharply, Newsom and legislators will face chronic deficits, plus added pressure to offset cuts in federal funds.
