A lot has happened in the last year.
It’s hard to stay focused on one thing when it feels like many aspects of life are under shifting sands. Our community reporter, Drew Sitton, makes this point right off the bat in today’s featured story.
Whether you’re aware of it, the ramifications of last summer’s HR 1— known colloquially as the Big Beautiful Bill— are still playing out. Most recently, on April 1, many legal immigrants, particularly refugees, asylum seekers and other immigrants with temporary protected status, no longer qualify for CalFresh.
Local agencies, churches and organizations are scrambling to respond, gathering resources where. they can to fill the gaps.
This is just the beginning of what a director at the San Diego Food Bank calls, a “slow downward spiral” as new work requirements will force some people under 64 out of the program in June.
