Today’s newsletter is presented by Richard Walker’s Pancake House La Jolla.
Good morning, San Diego.
How do you choose where you want to live? Do you look at the neighborhood first, or is the house most important? Do you look at the nightlife around your potential new home and consider noise concerns, or do you figure it will work itself out?
I ask this because I’m not sure if noise concerns are something I would take into consideration ahead of time, and it looks like I’m not the only one – an historic Hillcrest nightclub is now getting noise complaints from new neighbors. Number One on Fifth said that they are doing their best to work with the community.
I’m sympathetic to noise concerns. I’m now in my late thirties, which is to say my forties, and sleep went from being not particularly important in my misspent youth to absolutely crucial every single night, and despite swearing I would never, ever grow up to become old and cranky, I am definitely well down the road to both.
But honestly, if you are moving to a place as high-density and historically significant as Hillcrest, it’s kind of on you for not doing your research. (Sorry. But I did say it’s the sort of thing I would do, too.)
We also have lawmakers demanding answers about the I-5 live artillery incident on Saturday, and I can’t believe I am typing that, a suspension of rail service in North County, an eyesore in La Mesa getting controversial, and much more.
Also, if you’re up north and passing Palomar Airport this morning, just a heads up not to be concerned if you see emergency vehicles and flashing lights everywhere. It’s a pre-planned, annual drill that should be over and done with by late morning.
Finally, I wanted to highlight a timely story about a La Mesa flower shop, which just so happens to be my favorite flower shop, for reasons that will undoubtedly become clear in the story below. It’s the perfect place for anybody who enjoys a witchy aesthetic or harbors an appreciation for the strange and unusual. It’s that time of year, after all.
