Governor signs Midway Rising bill, clears path for final approval of embattled housing, retail project
Midway Rising just took a big step toward becoming a reality.
Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 344 yesterday, officially clearing out any potential environmental lawsuits over the project, which would build over 4,000 homes, 130,000 square feet of retail space and a new 16,000-seat arena around the site of the current Pechanga Arena.
The city still needs to finalize its deal with the developer to build on nearly 50 acres of city-owned land, but the project’s developer, Brad Termini, said in response to the bill becoming law that they could break ground as soon as next year.
Newsom’s decision to sign the bill means the project is likely to go before the city council for approval before the end of the year.
Maybe one day the new arena can host an evening as electric as the Padres’ 8-0 win at Petco Park last night.
Fernando Tatis Jr. led off the game with a home run, igniting the sold-out crowd. Manny Machado hit another in the first inning, giving the Padres a 2-0 lead that was never at risk.
Starting pitcher Michael King carried a no-hit bid into the 7th inning. And somehow, the Padres still weren’t done with memorable moments.
In the ninth inning, El Cajon-native Joe Musgrove took the mound — his first appearance in a major league game following two years of injuries. The crowd again roared to life as he emerged from the bullpen, and the national broadcast stuck around to show the baseball world what the hometown kid means to the Padres faithful.
It’ll be hard to top that, but the Padres will try as they look to clinch a Wild Card win in Game 2 tonight.

🧤 New California law bans officers from using gloves that deliver electric shocks: Newsom signed a law Tuesday banning state and federal officers from using shock gloves until 2030. The law comes after ICE was awarded $17 million to buy 6,000 pairs.

⚓️ U.S. Rep. Sara Jacobs visited the USS Abraham Lincoln alongside a group of bipartisan lawmakers after last week’s news that eight crew members attempted suicide during deployment. Jacobs said they are asking the Navy Inspector General to investigate the carrier’s conditions during deployment (KPBS)
⚡️ Coronado has officially joined San Diego Community Power, a nonprofit alternative to SDG&E, and city officials say it’s a step toward meeting the city’s emission reduction goals. (KPBS)
