How Marni von Wilpert went from a frustrated first-term councilmember to a favorite in one of the country’s biggest Congressional races
It was December of 2022, just after Democrats took total control of the San Diego City Council. It was an overlooked moment, but it proved pivotal for Councilmember Marni von Wilpert.
The council president shuffled assignments for the council committees, and von Wilpert lost her role leading the city’s infrastructure committee. Suddenly, it was clear she was on the outside looking in as a group of progressives took control of the City Council.
“I know politics is rough and tumble, and I know politics can be kind of a bloodsport — we all ran really hard-fought campaigns to get here and we have the scars to prove it,” she said, measuring each word. “But it doesn’t have to be that way.”
Our contributor Dan Friedell used that moment as a jumping-off point to look at how von Wilpert went from a frustrated first-term councilmember to a slight favorite in one of the country’s most high-profile congressional races in his latest profile on the competitive CA-48 race.
As Friedell wrote in the spring, the race has a critical role for Democrats nationally. It was one of the seats Gov. Gavin Newsom designed as a Democratic pickup opportunity in his midterm gerrymandering plan in the battle for control of Congress.
