Wendy Carvalho sees the art in people.

The University City graphics art and interior designer is nurturing her special gift, while flexing her flair for building community, through an inspiring neighborhood project: The University City Free Little Art Gallery (UC FLAG).

You’ll find the UC FLAG at 3187 Ducommun Ave. The wooden shadow box, trimmed in black, is anchored to a terracotta pot brimming with succulents. Peek inside, and you’ll discover a delightful array of colorful artwork, many sketches and paintings perched on small wooden easels. A solar light illuminates the tiny gallery at night, a nocturnal nod to the power of art to engage, delight and inspire.

Wendy thought about creating the UC FLAG for a few years before a life-changing event encouraged her to transform her passion into action:

“At the end of September, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I felt a strong need to create something positive and community-centered before beginning my treatment. Creating and sharing art is something that has always brought me happiness, and the gallery became a way to share joy, creativity, and connection, not just for me but for the neighbors and anyone who might need a little bit of inspiration.”

The community welcomed the UC FLAG with open arms. A well-stocked box of art supplies keeps its main gallery filled with whimsical art pieces, some created spontaneously on-site, while others come to life during at-home expression sessions. The box of art supplies, tucked beneath the main gallery, doubles as a Kids Zone where kid-made masterpieces take centerstage.

February’s call for art is Expressions of Love and Kindness. Drawings, paintings, collages, poems, affirmations and mini prints are welcome.

“The UC FLAG is meant for everyone,” Wendy explained. “I encourage our neighbors to come by, check it, and take art, leave art, or simply just enjoy the creativity that is left behind.”
