Happy Thursday, Beach & Bay!
As we head into Labor Day weekend and “Local’s Summer” begins, I’ve been gearing up for some good beach time before the summer sun fades. But El Niño might have other plans.
Tropical storm Marie is brewing off the coast of Baja, set to reach hurricane strength in the coming days. While current projections say the storm is unlikely to make landfall, there could still be some weather effects that reach our shores.
The Pacific Beach Instagram account shared a list of potential impacts on Wednesday, including high surf advisories, strong winds, rip currents, dangerous conditions for surfers and swimmers and possible showers through the weekend. High tides could also bring more flooding to our beach and bay neighborhoods for the third time this summer.
The strong winds also increase the risk of fire danger in San Diego county, according to local weather service reported by the LA Times.
However you choose to spend the long weekend, please remember to prioritize safety. Check the Surfline San Diego wave cams to get a sense of the swells and refer to the National Weather Service Surf Zone forecast for wave heights and rip current information. Health officials recommend waiting 24-48 hours after rain before going into the ocean, or risk swimming in high levels of bacteria and pollutants.
As always, don’t get in the water unless there’s a lifeguard on duty, don’t drink and drive, and do your best to look out for your neighbors. Wishing you a great weekend!
