Today’s newsletter is presented by Best of La Jolla.

Aloha, La Jolla!

La Jolla is for gardeners. On any given weekend, you’ll spot neighbors dressed in scruffy hats and grubby garden gloves, green thumbing their day away.

That passion for their craft is the heartbeat of the National Wildlife Federation’s (NWF) Garden for Wildlife, a movement dedicated to helping wildlife thrive in community spaces where people live, learn, work, worship and play.

Although the idea of “planting with a purpose” isn’t new — Garden for Wildlife took root five decades ago — the sense of urgency driving the movement is accelerating. Facing a national landscape where 30% of America’s wildlife species are at risk of extinction, the NWF considers gardeners valuable allies in their all-hands-on-deck advocacy to ensure the survival of wildlife in a rapidly changing world.

May is Garden for Wildlife Month, the perfect time to turn your garden, patio, yard or balcony into a Certified Wildlife Habitat. Certification is grounded in your personal commitment to practice sustainable gardening, while creating a living canvas of native plants and four habitat essentials — food, water, cover and places to raise young — for the birds, bees, butterflies and other wildlife that call our Jewel-by-the-Sea home.

Local gardeners can stand up for wildlife by joining the NWF’s network of 315,000 certified habitats. Garden for Wildlife makes restoring vital habitat for wildlife and creating tranquil spaces to encounter nature simple, meaningful and fun!

Shop your heart out at the La Jolla United Methodist Church Garden Store. Peruse a delightful array of seed packets, potted plants, herb bundles, fresh flowers and homemade butter prepared, with love, with the help of Methodist nursery school students. This pop-up market will be open to the community Wednesday, May 20, from 11:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Invite your friends and bring along your French market basket!
