Good morning, San Diego.

Two federal judges this week ruled the Trump administration must at least partially fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program amid the ongoing federal shutdown.

But it’s still unclear when families will receive their food benefits, and food banks in San Diego and across California are gearing up for a surge in demand.

Our featured story today is a snapshot of state’s feverish attempt to patch together a solution for the five-and-a-half-million low-income residents registered for CalFresh, California’s version of SNAP.

The state released $80 million to boost food banks, and Gov. Gavin Newsom sent the California National Guard to help food banks pack and distribute food.

“Today, people are panicked,” Carissa Casares, a spokesperson for Feeding San Diego, told our partners at CalMatters for their deep dive on the fears spreading across the state.

In less important news, San Diego FC lost to the Portland Timbers in penalty kicks Saturday. That pushes their playoff series to a decisive game three matchup at Snapdragon Stadium next Sunday as they try to keep an historic debut season alive.

But the Aztecs football team won its sixth straight game in an unexpected season that has things looking up for the program.
