The College-Rolando library is a key local hub. The community fears a loss of parking could keep residents away
One of the big arguments during every budget season in the city of San Diego is over maintaining hours at public buildings – fun stuff like rec centers, libraries, and ahem, the restrooms that folks inevitably need while having a good hang (but we digress).
College-Rolando residents would love to have all the spots other communities have. Alas, they do not. They do have a small park and a branch library.
They also have the data that shows just how popular that branch is for a community that lacks a rec center and other amenities like larger parks.
But parking spaces play a big role in their success. They lost it once, almost a decade ago, and felt the effects. Now they fear what’s going to happen for residents as a new development goes up next door to their long-time home on Montezuma Road. They know construction will have an impact, but what about the neighbors who eventually move into the new housing?
Will there be room for library patrons? They aren’t there just to check out books or DVDs, but also come in for community meetings, summer lunch programs and voting.
Our Drew Sitton explores what happens when those devoted to a dependable community resource feel like it’s being squeezed.
