Hello, Point Loma and Ocean Beach!
After a long lead up to the midterms, the results are finally starting to come in around the country. Hopefully you were able to exercise your civic duty via mail or one of the polling places around Point Loma and OB.
The biggest news to come out of election day was the Democratic Party’s wave of support across the country, flipping both the house and the senate blue. Then on the state level, California elected its first Latino governor Xavier Becerra on Tuesday. After much talk about Proposition 40, California’s proposed billionaire’s tax, the opposition won out and the measure looks like it will ultimately fail to pass. California’s refusal to pass a progressive measure doesn’t mean our state was ready to adopt a decidedly conservative one. San Diego Assemblymember Carl DeMaio’s GOP-backed voter ID measure was declared dead with nearly half of votes counted.
But locally, we were all paying close attention to the District 2 City Council race. The former Coronado mayor who recently relocated to Point Loma, Richard Bailey ran as an independent against the Democrat Nicole Crosby, a current deputy city attorney and longstanding community leader in Claremont. Ultimately, Crosby looks almost certainly on her way to defeat Bailey with initial Tuesday night results showing a commanding lead. After a buzzy fight for this city council seat, what does a Nicole Crosby win mean for you and me?
Well, a few big focuses of Crosby’s campaign was rebuilding the trust in our local government, lowering the cost of living and fixing the crumbling infrastructure around our community. In a Q&A with the Union Tribune, Crosby said the first thing she plans to do in office is audit the city budget in order to reestablish trust in our local government. She also plans to meet with county and state partners to ensure a one-year, five-year and 10-year plan to fix the ailing roads around D2.
Crosby was also adamant on cracking down on short-term rentals, a prevalent issue around OB and Point Loma. Many short-term rentals stand empty for more than half the year while the cost of living for locals has skyrocketed. Crosby plans to update our short-term rental policies to create more affordable housing for D2 residents.
As a fellow District 2 resident, I am eager to see some of Crosby deliver on these promises.
