Hello, La Mesa!

It’s probably an exaggeration to say that La Mesa is some sort of literary destination, but it was awesome on Saturday to watch a full bus pull into a Lake Murray shopping center. The bus riders were on a tour of local independent bookstores, with two stops in La Mesa for the first time this year. I remember when there weren’t any East County locations in the annual San Diego Book Crawl!

The line at The Book Place was already onto the sidewalk before the bus arrived. Personally, I was not in the mood for crowds, so I went and got some ube cheesecake at Extraordinary Banana Pudding instead of visiting The Book Place. I promise to return at a less busy date!

The second stop for the bus was of course the county’s only romance bookstore, Meet Cute. A block away is Maxwell’s House of Books, but the owner chooses not to participate in the chaotic ‘Super Bowl of Books.’

There’s another not-to-be missed literary destination. The library! And this week, our librarians weighed in on some new subgenre reads to check out. Their top pick, “A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping” sounds similar to a series I enjoy, Ilona Andrews’ “Innkeeper Chronicles,” so I’ll have to give it a try.
