Hello, Point Loma and Ocean Beach!
After another successful OB Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off, the summer is rolling right on into the next event — the Fourth of July! This Saturday we are celebrating the 250th anniversary of our nation’s Declaration of Independence.
Given that Ocean Beach showcases some of the best our country has to offer, the Independence Day celebrations are sure to be a good time.
Unfortunately, as I have mentioned in past newsletters, there will be no drone show or fireworks this year in OB. This mostly has to do with the would-be event organizers’ inability to get proper permitting from the city. And fireworks off the pier aren’t an option, thanks to its crippling infrastructure.
However, that doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty of shows to see from Point Loma and OB. First, there is the Big Bay Boom, which takes place at several spots along San Diego Bay at 9:15 p.m. Among the spots launching fireworks along the bay is Shelter Island. Although it can be a bit tricky with parking, this is a great spot to see fireworks up close and catch the rest going off along the bay and in Coronado. It’s also pretty easy to see from the higher points of Point Loma where the bay is visible.
Despite replacing the summer fireworks with a nightly drone show, SeaWorld’s fireworks return for one night on Saturday at 9:30 p.m. You have to pay for admission into the park to get up close and personal, but as we all know, SeaWorld fireworks are visible from most all parts of OB. Robb Field will likely be a good place to catch them.
If you’re looking to give back to the community after the celebration, SeaWorld is hosting a beach clean up on Sunday July 5 at Fiesta Island from 7 a.m.-8:30 a.m. You can RSVP for the cleanup here.
