Aloha, La Jolla!
Where were you the morning of Saturday, April 5, 2025?
If you cherish the Fay Avenue Bike Path, chances are you joined dozens of neighbors to cheer a grassroots campaign that protected a beloved open space from a 30-foot AT&T 5G cell tower and diesel generator.
Hosted by the Save the La Jolla Bike Path Coalition, the celebration raised a collective toast to the hundreds of La Jollans who stood up and spoke out for community health, safety and the preservation of a neighborhood treasure — something enjoyed by generations of pedestrians, bicyclists, nature lovers and residents of all ages.
Like most David and Goliath stories, this grassroots movement begins with a small act of grace: a chance conversation between two women, sparked by their mutual concern about the proposed cell tower’s impacts on their community’s quality of life.
Delighted to discover their complementing skill sets, Bird Rock mom Patti Garay and Windansea artist Dorothy Herman began pouring over reams of research on the possible health, safety and environmental harms posed by the electromagnetic waves generated by wireless cell towers.
Launching an advocacy campaign to educate and engage neighbors seemed like a logical next step. In no time, the duo built a groundswell movement powered by community organizing at its finest.
The campaign’s tipping point occurred the afternoon following a lively evening town hall meeting, featuring a renowned wireless radiation expert, Dr. Kent Chamberlain. Shortly after the team stopped by San Diego City Council President Joe LaCava’s office to deliver a bag filled with campaign postcards — festooned with a Valentine’s Day balloon bouquet — an email arrived in Patti’s inbox: AT&T had withdrawn its 5G cell tower permit application, proving La Jollans are stronger together!
